Rwanda

Rwanda is in East Central Africa, bordered by Burundi, Uganda, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is a small country, about the size of Munster but has a population of 9-10 million, which makes it easily the most densely populated country in continental Africa.

The capital, Kigali, is in the centre of the country. I will be living and working in Gisagara district, just east of Butare in the south.

My work title is Education Management Advisor. I am working with the Director of Education (Francois) and the Chargé for Education (Alexis) who are jointly responsible for the 85 schools in the district, 65 primary (plus some additional preschool units) and 20 second-level, two of which are private. In addition there are 'Catch-Up' units - a special six-years-in-three course for children who dropped out along the way - and an adult education service.

Work has been very slow in starting for various reasons (read my blog for all the details - www.roheithir.blogspot.com). I have just completed one hundred days in Rwanda and things are finally beginning to pick up a little! However, my associate Tina Payne finally gave up hoping that things were going to work out here so she has moved to Shogwe Diocese and will be working there with Michael Tennant for her placement. So, for the time being at least, I'm on my own!
